What is a Chromatic Tuner?

A chromatic tuner detects any musical note across the full chromatic scale — all 12 notes in every octave. Unlike instrument-specific tuners that only recognize the notes of a particular tuning, a chromatic tuner identifies whatever note you play and shows you exactly how close it is to perfect pitch.

This makes chromatic tuners the most versatile tuning tool available. Whether you're tuning a guitar to an alternate tuning, checking the intonation of a violin, or warming up a trumpet, a chromatic tuner works for all of them.

How to Use This Chromatic Tuner

  1. Click the microphone button to begin. Allow microphone access when your browser prompts you.
  2. Play a single note on your instrument. Hold it steady for the most accurate reading.
  3. The tuner displays the closest note name (e.g., A4), the detected frequency in Hz, and how many cents sharp or flat you are.
  4. Adjust your instrument until the indicator is centered and the status shows "In Tune."
  5. Optionally adjust the A4 reference frequency if your ensemble uses a different concert pitch.
