This calculator uses the listed scientific-pitch octave conventions. Parts for low brass, recorders, guitar-family instruments, and historical scores can use different notation or clef conventions; confirm the instrument and part before relying on an octave conversion. It calculates pitch but does not validate whether a selected note lies inside the instrument's playable range.
What the instrument key means
A transposing instrument produces a concert pitch that differs from the note printed in its part. A B♭ clarinet or trumpet playing written C sounds concert B♭. An alto sax playing written C sounds concert E♭. A chromatic tuner reports the sounding concert pitch, so its display can be correct even when it does not match the printed note.
The octave matters too. Soprano B♭ instruments sound a whole step below the written note, while tenor sax sounds a whole step plus an octave below. The profiles above include those common octave displacements rather than converting only the pitch class.

Method and limits
Note names are converted through MIDI semitone numbers, then frequency is calculated in 12-tone equal temperament from the selected A4 reference. Enharmonic spellings are shown together because a tuner cannot infer the score's harmonic spelling.
The tool does not read a score and cannot resolve alternate clefs, historical horn notation, or publisher-specific octave conventions. Treat the written-C example as a quick check that the selected profile matches the part in front of you.

The profile conventions were checked against Yamaha's instrument guides: its saxophone guide explains that written C sounds B♭ on tenor/soprano sax and E♭ on alto/baritone sax; its clarinet guide gives written-to-sounding scales for A and B♭ clarinets; and its horn guide documents modern horn notation in F.
